Social Network Marketing

Just what is social network marketing and what does it mean to you?

It's the latest evolution in communication, and you can ride it like a surfer rides a wave to extend the power of your website.

We have traveled far from the olden days when people depended on their neighbors for phone messages, to a couple decades ago when having their own answering machine meant they could get a message at some point in the day. Today we have instant availability where anyone can be reached at any time of the day no matter what they are doing via their cell phones.

And the same thing is happening with computers. Just a decade ago, not all homes had them. Now, most people surf the internet from multiple locations throughout their daily routine. We hear the term Web 2.0, and it means the people-to-people interconnectivity that the internet has made possible -especially social networking places.

Social Network Marketing Follows the Change

Consider this: Do you contact some of your family and friends by posting a comment on their MySpace or following their tweets on Twitter? Do you know someone who is easier to reach by writing on his wall on Facebook than through his email address?

And the internet is not just limited to personal computers anymore. Connectivity is available through handheld devices such as phones, daily planners, and even videogames. Who knows what the next decade will bring?

If you doubt that social network marketing could be something interesting, here are today's numbers: Almost two-thirds of all people who go online worldwide visit MySpace. A few more than that visit YouTube; a few less sign on to Facebook. And just over a quarter -of all Web users worldwide- visit Wikipedia.

Keep in mind that as you begin putting social network marketing ideas to work for you, it's smart to continue your AdSense and pay-per-click advertising. You'll need to keep them in place as you experiment and find out which of these opportunities work best for you.

Once you've created your website, your job is to reach out on the internet and link back to your website in as many ways as possible, including with social network marketing. This is what you can do:

  • You can visit a place like Squidoo.com and create a lens. A lens is a page of information; write something related to what you're selling. Scribd.com is a similar site that allows people to publish their take on any topic-again, something relative to your website. These sites and others like them allow you to link back to your website. And they will all let you put links on the various social networking places.

  • HubPages has several advantages over the others. After you post an article, you are permitted to add a sidebar. Use it to insert a link to your website; or make a video and embed it.

  • It's also possible to create a HubPage Flagship Hub. They post a revolving list of topics-currently it contains thirty per month-and you can apply to write one of them. They do have a list of stiff requirements, such as 1500 original words, at least five embedded videos, and at least three original images. But they actually pay you a small fee for writing the Flagship Hub, and it lets you link back to your own webpages, as long as you offer relevant content. If you want to get on board with this, check it out early in the month while opportunities are available.

  • If we're talking advertising dollars, consider spending them on Facebook. At Facebook you can focus on your preferred demographics. Your keywords come from users' own self-descriptions. Targeting your ad very specifically increases its chances for better performance. Facebook lets you create your ad and at Step 4, it gives you a recommended bid. Experts suggest twenty cents, which comes out to $200 for a minimum of 1000 clicks, but you can bid as low as a penny on pay-per-click and two cents for pay-for-views.

  • You can also submit your website to StumbleUpon. This is a place where someone's search for information on a topic is answered with a list of sites recommended by StumbleUpon users. You can sign up, download the toolbar, and visit your own website. Give it a thumbs-up rating. Return to StumbleUpon, and check to see if other people are stumbling upon and rating your website. They can also write reviews about it. And, you can invest $25 in an advertising campaign that will bring 500 Stumblers to your website.

  • If you're interested in making a video, you can upload it through YouTube at no cost. YouTube automatically inserts all the html code necessary, and once you've created the video you can embed it into your website as well as your own social networking pages. You only need a two-minute piece -people will get bored with anything longer- so create several and link them. Another great facet of YouTube is its contest option, which you can peruse at http://youtube.com/contests_main. The contest, of course, will concern the best way to use your product.

Conclusions on Social Network Marketing

Your own personality, your product, and your website will help you to determine which of these ways best suit you.

All of them will allow you to refine your work until advertising begins to pay off with real traffic and money in your pocket.
